Introducing the Bay Area LGBT Community Fundraising Events Calendar

Horizons Foundation's Community Fundraising Events Calendar is a new resource that will let individuals know what's happening in the LGBT community and help organizations plan their calendar of fundraising events. Examples might include an LGBT organization's gala or a street fair that benefits the larger LGBT community. Events added to the calendar will be posted within a few days, after minor editing and approval. (Please note that it's not intended to be full calendar of everything happening in the Bay Area. Please refer to the posting guildelines for more details.)

If you know of another fundraiser not currently listed, please let the organization know about the calendar and ask them to add their event. Thanks!

Horizons Funds a Study on the Economic Impact of Same-Sex Marriages on Sonoma County

A new report from the Center for Regional Economic Analysis estimated that same-sex weddings would account for more than $112 million in business revenue, taxes, and new wages in Sonoma County over the next three years. The estimates derive from the large number of same-sex couples in California, Sonoma County’s tourism patterns, its desirability as a location for "destination weddings," and expected wedding expenditures. The independent study, written by an economics professor at Sonoma State University, was funded by Horizons Foundation through the Gay and Lesbian Fund of the Redwood Empire.

"Celebrate@Home" is a Huge Success!

Celebrate@Home

The final tally is in, and the outcome couldn't be clearer: you made Celebrate@Home an enormous success!

Thanks to everyone who placed a bid, donated an item, or spread the word, Horizons Foundation raised over $32,000 for our grantmaking, donor, and leadership programs for the LGBT community - well beyond our original goal. Simply put....wow! Special thanks to our Auction Committee and Devesh Khatu (Events Manager) for putting together such a fabulous auction.

Everyone who won an item will receive an email from us soon. Gift certificates will be mailed. If you won a physical item, we'll get in touch to arrange a time for you to pick it up from our offices.

Even if you didn't wind up with a winning bid, we hope you'll still make a donation to Horizons Foundation. LGBT organizations have relied on us for 28 years - and we rely on you. Thank you.

Horizons Foundation Mourns Del Martin

Del Martin

Horizons Foundation’s board and staff joins with thousands upon thousands of LGBT people and our allies in mourning the death of Del Martin. Del and her wife, Phyllis Lyon, are among the true heroes in our movement’s history. For more than five decades, Del stood among our movement’s leading lesbian rights activists, an iconic leader in the struggle for the rights, dignity, and equality of LGBT people. The impact of her tireless activism and leadership are incalculable, and her memory one that will be honored for years to come.

You can read more about Del and how to honor her memory on the National Center for Lesbian Rights website.

Horizons Foundation's 2007 Annual Report

Horizons is delighted to share our 2007 Annual Report, Breaking New Ground: PDF [4.2Mb]

In 2007, Horizons crossed a major threshold in our work: for the first time, we gave out more than $2 million in grants in a single year. Many thanks to all of the donors, grantees, funders, and volunteers who helped make this wonderful milestone possible for the LGBT community - we couldn't have done it without you!

NEW RESEARCH FROM HORZIONS: Groundbreaking Study Examines Charitable Giving in the LGBT Community

By all indications, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people are at least as generous as other Americans. So why are less than 5% of them giving to support LGBT causes? More importantly, how can LGBT nonprofits capture more LGBT dollars? These are the central questions raised by new research just released by Horizons Foundation.

The first multi-part study of its kind, Building a New Tradition of LGBT Philanthropy offers a snapshot of current giving to LGBT organizations, and points to ways to expand the pool of individual donors whose untapped potential can power both the immediate and long-term success of the LGBT movement. The research is based on giving data from 39 LGBT and HIV organizations in the Bay Area, an extensive online donor survey, and a series of focus groups with LGBT donors. More...
