Summary
The Deputy Development Director (DDD) will help create and implement annual fundraising activities that include events, solicitations, direct mail, and corporate requests. Working in close coordination with the Director of Development and Gift Planning (DDGP), the DDD will have significant and direct responsibility for key development activities and outcomes. The DDD serves as a critical face of the foundation with external constituencies, including individual donors, corporate supporters, and vendors. Self-motivation, innovation, extroversion, detail-orientation, the ability to successfully handle multiple projects, and sound judgment are essential in this position.
Essential Functions
- Donor relations and solicitation
- Plan, implement, track, and report on all direct mail solicitations of existing, lapsed, and past donors as well as implement creative and innovative approaches to solicitation of new donors
- Provide support to board of directors and other solicitors to help ensure that Leadership Circle goals are met
- Track and report board progress towards goals established in board members' annual Individual Fundraising Plans
- Solicit individual donors as appropriate
- Creation and implementation of events
Full charge of planning and implementing the organization's events, including the annual gala and auction, golf tournament, philanthropic services events, professional advisors events, and other donor-related or fundraising events that come up throughout the course of the year. Event-related responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Conceptualize fresh and successful themes for existing events and analyze potential new events opportunities as they emerge
- Maintain events schedule, with timelines to ensure that adequate planning and preparation time is included
- Assist with preparation and oversight of event budgets to ensure that revenues are optimized, and expenses remain within budget
- Identify and work with relevant vendors, including caterers, designers, venues, and consultants, and in-kind donors to events
- Oversee creation and production of all collateral materials related to events
- With the DDGP, create successful corporate, media, and in-kind sponsorship programs
- Recruit/coordinate volunteers and committees to achieve goals
- Ensure that all events receive maximum visibility
- Ensure that all appropriate event follow-ups and acknowledgements are completed, results are accurately recorded, and feedback regarding successes and needed improvements is sought out and used
- Planning and support
- Participate in annual planning process to set development goals and organizational workplan
- Assist the Director of Development & Gift Planning as needed
- Communications
- Oversee donor communications, including e-mail, donation acknowledgement, newsletters, annual report, event invitations, and other communications
- Oversee regular updating of Horizons' website
- Create and implement strategies for promotion and visibility of the foundation in social media such as Facebook and Twitter
- Track and keep record of media coverage of Horizons
- Oversee production and distribution of periodic press releases
Other Duties
- Provide back-up support to donor-advised fund program
- Assist in proofreading of development-related documents
- Attend events, staff meetings, board/development committee meetings, and other organizational meetings and events
- Ensure maintenance of accurate and complete development files
- Other development and communications duties as assigned

- Extensive command of FileMaker Pro, Excel, Microsoft Word
- Creativity, outgoing personality, and ability to work well with many types of individuals
- Solid teamwork skills and ability to work successfully in a demanding nonprofit environment
- Flexibility to attend occasional evening/weekend events
- Commitment to the LGBT community
Physical Requirements
This job requires the ability to lift up to 45 lbs. and other physical abilities required to actively participate in event set-up and break-down.
