"Celebrating Our Communities"

Horizons' 2003 Celebrating Our Communities events marked a new level of excellence for this annual gala. On top of the success in fundraising and attendance, the quality and relevance of the evening's program shown in a new way. The speakers included representatives from the three Cornerstone Award recipients:

• Sylvia Guerrero, mother of Gwen Araujo, a male-to-female transgender teenager who was brutally murdered in Newark, California. Ms. Guerrero, who accepted the posthumous award on behalf of her daughter, is a passionate and moving speaker on transgender issues.
  
  
• A representative from the Wells Fargo Foundation, who spoke about the corporation's commitment to the LGBT community and the important role Horizons plays.
  
  
• Kevin Cathcart, Executive Director of Lambda Legal, who spoke about the Supreme Court case Lawrence and Garner v. Texas. This major victory for the LGBT movement struck down Texas's "Homosexual Conduct" law, which criminalized sex between consenting adults of the same sex.
