When There is More than Cash...
How to Leverage Your Charitable Giving with Special Assets

Monday, May 23, 12:00-1:30 p.m.

Erik Dryburgh, Principal at Silk, Adler, and Colvin, and one of the Bay Area's legal gems for the nonprofit community, will explore the topic of complicated charitable gifts - namely real estate, closely held businesses, IRAs, employee stock options, and other gifts with restrictions. Erik will explain how to maximize tax benefits and avoid tax problems when gifting of assets other than cash or publicly traded securities. This session is intended for LGBT individual donors and their advisors.

Erik DryburghErik Dryburgh is an attorney who specializes in charitable giving, charitable estate planning, and nonprofit organizations. Mr. Dryburgh is a frequent speaker in the areas of charitable giving and estate planning. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the San Francisco Estate Planning Council, and a past member of the Board of Directors of the Northern California Planned Giving Council. Mr. Dryburgh is the author of many articles including "Charitable Remainder Trusts" in California Estate Planning, Continuing Education of the Bar (2002); "Stock Options & Charitable Giving: Do They Mix?" in the Journal of Gift Planning (2nd Quarter 2000); and "The Overselling of Charitable Reverse Split-Dollar Insurance" in the Journal of Taxation of Exempt Organizations (July/August 1998). Erik is a co-editor of The Charitable Gift Planning News.


LGBT Estate Planning for the Charitably Inclined When You Have No Direct Heirs
Wednesday, June 22, 12:00-2:00 p.m.

LGBT people sometimes have particular circumstances and opportunities when it comes to estate planning. For LGBT individuals wanting to maximize their charitable interests, this session will be a more in-depth look at different estate planning techniques. Creating legacies in the community is possible through both straightforward gifts and more advanced planning. In addition, at this seminar, Horizons Foundation will present its planned giving policies and opportunities for donors. Attorneys David Gellman of Goldman, Gelman, Melbostad, Gibson, and Harris LLP; Deb Kinney, DLK Law Group; and Tony Zinge of Wells Fargo will be presenting.

Business Succession Planning for LGBT Business People
Friday, July 22, 12:00-2:00 p.m.

This session will discuss a variety of business succession scenarios - charitable and other gifting, selling, mergers and acquisitions, employee stock option programs, and taking public. All LGBT people need to plan for their futures, and LGBT business people need to plan for the future of their companies as well. Valuation considerations will be discussed, along with the many creative charitable mechanisms for ensuring income streams for yourself, your partner, and the community. Join this highly informative discussion, which will be led by M. Jean Johnston, an estate planning and tax specialist for the LGBT community.

LGBT Aging - Are We Prepared?
Wednesday, September 7, 12:00-2:00 p.m.

As individuals, couples, and a community, we need to plan for our senior years. This workshop will explore issues such as senior services, housing, long-term care needs, and insurance, and provide helpful information on advanced healthcare directoves and durable powers of attorney. You will walk out of this session with a clearer strategy for what you need to do to prepare yourself for aging, as well as for completing those important documents that may need attention. Presenters will include Helene Wenzel, an LGBT elder law specialist; Maria Marquez from Wells Fargo's Eldercare Program; and Joyce Pearson from NCLR's Elder Law Project.

Six Key Strategies for Financial Parenting
Wednesday, November 30, 12:00-2:00 p.m.

Horizons welcomes back the fabulous Joan DiFuria and Stephen Goldbart from Money, Meaning and Choices to lead this interactive session for parents and anyone with children in their lives. DiFuria and Goldbart will present six key strategies for successful financial parenting of children of all ages, with a special focus on young adults transitioning to independence. Learn how partners need to work together to raise motivated, compassionate, and responsible children, and how to have a constructive family meeting.

Joan DiFuria, MFCC and Stephen Goldbart, Ph.D. are from the Money, Meaning and Choices Institute. Their work with families has been featured in numerous media outlets, such as the New York Times, Newsweek, KQED, CBS Morning Show, and NBC with Tom Brokaw.

LGBT Estate Planning for the Charitably Inclined
Tuesday, August 16, 12:00-2:00 p.m.

LGBT people sometimes have particular needs and opportunities when it comes to estate planning. This session will be an in-depth workshop looking at estate planning techniques for LGBT individuals, couples, and families wanting to maximize their charitable interests. Couples and families have additional complications because of the lack of recognition of same-sex marriages. This session will discuss straightforward gifting techniques, more advanced estate planning and tax strategies, as well as the current situation with domestic partnership laws in California (AB 205). Options for legacy gifting at Horizons Foundation will also be presented.

Deb L. Kinney is a partner at DLK Law Group, which specializes in estate planning. She received her B.A. in Sociology from the University of California and her J.D. from the New College School of Law. She is also a member of the California State Bar Trusts and Estates Section, and the Bar Association of San Francisco. Deb speaks regularly on current issues affecting the LGBT community.

Linda M. Scaparotti, Esq., has been practicing law in the greater Bay Area for 24 years. Her practice includes family law and estate planning for same sex clients, as well as writing and lecturing extensively on these issues, including AB205. Ms. Scaparotti has worked with over 1500 couples. She is on the Executive Board of the San Francisco Trial Lawyer's Association, the Human Rights Campaign, past Chair of Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom, and a previous Human Rights Commissioner in the City of Oakland, where she was instrumental in enacting Oakland's domestic partners' legislation.

Diane R. Cash is a certified specialist in estate planning, trust, and probate law (the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization) who has been practicing law since 1982. She opened her own firm in 1994 after working for many years at one of San Francisco’s largest law firms. She speaks frequently to lawyers, other advisors, and the general public about estate planning, particularly for unmarried couples. She is the Treasurer of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights. She also was a longtime volunteer for the AIDS Legal Referral Panel where she was a member of the Board of Directors for six years (1995-2000) and has acted as a mentor to scores of other volunteer attorneys and the Panel staff. She received a B.A. from Pomona College (1979) and a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley (Boalt Hall) (1982).
