Presentations by Nancy Flaxman, social worker and consultant for openhouse; Amy Wolfe, long-term health care specialist; and Thomas Lucas, professional fiduciary and geriatric case manager.

This session is co-sponsored by New Leaf: Services For Our Community, openhouse, National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), and the Lesbian and Gay Issues Network (LGAIN) of the American Society on Aging

Charitable Trusts - How Do They Work?

This session is for both professional advisors as well as individuals who want to get a better understanding of charitable remainder trusts and charitable lead trusts. When individuals have taxable estates and charitable intentions, CRTs and CLTs can be excellent, flexible, tax-saving vehicles that also help your community. How can you create an income stream as part of your retirement planning with a charitable trust? How can you pick more than one organization to benefit? How can you use your retirement funds or real estate to create a trust? Learn about how trusts and income on trusts are taxed and how they affect your bottom line. These and many other practical questions will be explored in this session with two experts in the field: Suzanne Muntzing, Wealth Management Specialist for Wells Fargo; and Rick Mordesovich, Senior Vice President, Private Asset Management for Neuberger/Berman.

This session is co-sponsored by Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (BALIF)

Am I Covered? An LGBT Guide to Insurance

How do you decide if you need life insurance, long-term care insurance, or if you have adequate coverage? What are the particular tax implications and other considerations that LGBT people and couples need to consider? How do you use life insurance as a replacement for a charitable gift in your estate plan? What are the new rules for domestic partners on insurance products? Learn how to name beneficiaries correctly in your plans if you have a trust. These are some of the questions that will be covered by our two presenters: Mark Battat, Producer in the Private Client Group of Willis Insurance Services of California; and Peter-Eric Phillip, Financial Consultant for Cambridge Investment Research.

Sessions in Other Bay Area Locations

LGBT Estate Planning for the Charitably Inclined

LGBT people often have particular needs when it comes to estate planning. Couples and families, for example, face complications because same-sex marriages are not legally recognized. LGBT people also have special opportunities, including opportunities to create meaningful and permanent legacies to support our community. This session will be an in-depth workshop looking at basic estate planning issues and techniques for LGBT individuals, couples, and families wanting to provide for loved ones and maximize their charitable interests. This session will discuss straightforward gifting techniques, more advanced estate planning and tax strategies, as well as current applications of domestic partnership and other relevant laws in California (AB205, SB565). Information about Horizons Foundation's LGBT Community Endowment Fund will also be presented.

Because of high levels of interest in this important topic, Horizons will offer this session in five locations around the Bay Area.
