Update on AB205!

Almost a year and half after AB205 went into effect, we can now advise our clients a little bit better on the complexities of this new law in California. With IRS letters or rulings on the subject, as well as new divorce cases, advisors can more confidently advise clients. Networking and cocktails 5:30 - 6:30. Educational session with credit 6:30 - 8:00.

IRAs and CRTs: How to Combine Charitable Giving with Smart Tax Savings for LGBT Clients

Since IRAs are taxed so heavily, they often make an ideal charitable gift. When IRAs fund a charitable remainder trust, they can "give twice" by naming both a beneficiary and a nonprofit organization. Learn more about how this is a particularly useful strategy for LGBT individuals. This seminar is for both advisors and donors. Networking breakfast and educational event.

March 2006
Lasting Impact: What Makes the Most Sense for your Client?
DAFs vs. Private Foundations vs. Supporting Organizations

Erik Dryburgh, a Principal with Silk, Adler, and Colvin, a firm specializing in nonprofit law and charitable planning, will decode the criteria and decision points for advising clients about the various options of charitable gifting. Horizons Foundation will also present information about their newly implemented donor-advised fund products specifically designed for LGBT donors and clients.

January 2006
Calling All Realtors!
New Legislation Affecting Your LGBT Clients

Come for a complimentary lunch and seminar at the beautiful Presidio to learn about how to correctly advise your same-sex clients when titling their new homes or refinancing.

With all of the changes in the laws for California registered domestic partners, come learn why joint tenancy is usually not the right choice for titling property for same-sex couples. Learn how it can trigger unnecessary gift taxes between partners that are still not considered married under the law and what the better options are for many of your clients. Learn what the difference is between keeping separate property and community property for registered domestic partners.

Registered domestic partners now have new options to be exempt from reassessment of real property because of Senate Bill 565, newly enacted as of January 1, 2006, which may have far reaching implications for your clients.

In order to better serve your clients, Horizons Foundation and Alternative Mortgage Sources offer you this informative seminar by a leading expert in estate planning for the LGBT community, Deb Kinney, Esq. Bring your questions, client scenarios, and even your clients!

Deb L. Kinney is a partner at DLK Law Group, which specializes in estate planning. She received her BA in Sociology from the University of California and her JD from the New College School of Law. Ms. Kinney was a residential realtor with Pacific Union and still has her broker license. Deb speaks regularly on current issues affecting the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.
