Gwen Araujo Memorial Fund for Transgender Education

On the first anniversary of Gwen Araujo's brutal murder in Newark, California, Horizons Foundation created a fund to reduce the ignorance and hatred that caused this terrible hate-crime in the Bay Area.

PURPOSE:
To support school-based programs in the nine-county Bay Area that promote understanding of transgender people and issues, through annual modest-sized grants.

ADMINISTRATION & OVERSIGHT:
This fund is a "field of interest" fund and administered by Horizons staff. An advisory committee of five to seven members of the community with expertise in transgender issues and school-based advocacy advises the staff. Due diligence on potential grantees and oversight of grantees is done by Horizons staff. As with all grantmaking, the Horizons Board of Directors ultimately authorizes all grants from the fund. If feasible, the fund will run concurrently with Horizons Community Issues grants, so that organizations may have the opportunity to submit one application for two possible sources of funding, which would make the process more efficient for both the potential grantee as well as Horizons staff.
