Horizons Foundation’s Response to United States v. Skrmetti

Today’s Supreme Court decision in United States v. Skrmetti deals a devastating blow to transgender youth and their families. By upholding states’ bans on gender-affirming care for minors, the Court has effectively stripped the right of young people to access safe, effective, and essential medical treatment. This decision not only inflicts irreparable physical and psychological harm on Tennessee’s trans youth and their families, but also those in the 25+ states with similar bans and restrictions.
In her powerful dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor reminds us exactly what’s at stake:
“By retreating from meaningful judicial review exactly where it matters most, the Court abandons transgender children and their families to political whims. In sadness, I dissent.”
We dissent, too. Thunderously.
This moment—like so many others before it—demands action. It has consequences for all of us, especially those who don’t live in places like the San Francisco Bay Area with strong legal protections and rich LGBTQ nonprofit ecosystems. Now is the time to mobilize, fight back, and stand in solidarity with those communities most affected by this ruling.
In these times, we must continue to find strength and comfort in one another: marching, organizing, defending, celebrating with our LGBTQ community and allies. As your LGBTQ community foundation, Horizons—just like each of you—is in this fight for the long haul, because when no one else will, we must take care of ourselves.
