Joie Hubbert and Mary Greer were a committed couple for over 37 years and as a way to honor their relationship and longtime commitment to the community, Ms Hubbert chose, through her estate planning, to provide funds to various organizations in whose work and mission she believed deeply. They established the Joie B. Hubbert and Mary C. Greer Testamentary Donor Advised Fund at Horizons Foundation.
Ms. Hubbert passed away in 2006 after a bout with pancreatic cancer. Not being one to miss an opportunity, Ms. Hubbert chose to make her entire IRA payable to Horizons Foundation. Prior to her death, she recommended that any proceeds from the IRA that Horizons eventually received be granted by Horizons to five different organizations in equal proportions. We were truly honored on behalf of Joie and Mary to make grants from their fund to National Center for Lesbian Rights, openhouse, Lambda Legal Defense, Smuin Ballet, and Horizons Foundation.
Horizons is also honored that Ms. Hubbert entrusted Horizons with the testamentary gift that made the grants possible. Horizons is committed to providing both donors and organizations with the tools that make charitable gifting as efficient and powerful as possible. Especially when donors have assets that they wish to be split among various organizations that they care about, using a testamentary donor-advised fund at Horizons Foundation can be a very convenient tool. IRAs in particular are excellent assets to give because they can be distributed separately from the estate and are 100% deductible when gifting to a nonprofit instead of to an individual.
We thank our community organizations for the extraordinary work the do - and for helping make it possible for the dreams of Joie and Mary to live on.
