2005 Community Issues Grants

Advocacy, Awareness, and Civil Rights

And Castro for All - $4,000
General support to foster a genuinely welcoming Castro neighborhood and broader Bay Area LGBT community and to help to build relationships that foster dialogue and understanding by challenging beliefs and practices that undermine inclusion across and within LGBT sub-communities.
The Dyke March - $2,000
General support for the San Francisco Dyke March, which builds community among dykes and all women who support social justice and freedom. The march is the world's largest annual grassroots dyke event.
Equality California Institute - $7,500
General support to ensure and promote the dignity, safety, equality, and civil rights of all LGBT Californians by educating the public, mobilizing activists, and building coalitions with local, state, and national groups in order to promote equality and understanding.
National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) - $5,000
Project support for NCLR's Immigration Project. This project serves LGBT immigrants from diverse communities and cultures with specialized legal advice as early as possible after their arrival in order to maximize their chances of remaining legally in the United States.
San Francisco LGBT Community Center - $3,000
General support for the Center, whose mission is to provide a safe, supportive, and accessible space to connect people with the many agencies, groups, and activities that address their social, recreational, political, and spiritual needs.
TGI Justice Project - $5,500
General support for TGIJP's program to challenge and end the human and civil rights abuses committed against transgender, gender variant, and intersex (TGI) people in California prisons and beyond.
Transgender Law Center - $7,500
General support for TLC's Community Legal Services Program. This program provides free legal education and advice to members of the transgender community.
Trikone - $5,500
General support for community programs that serve LGBT people of South Asian heritage.

Arts and Culture

Black Coalition on AIDS - $4,450
Project support for BCA's community-building programs, including the annual Black LGBT Film Festival, as part of a comprehensive approach to HIV prevention. BCA provides an array of services to people living with HIV/AIDS.
Black Gay Letters and Arts Movement (B/GLAM) - $3,000
General support for programs that seek to build community among black gay men through the arts, and to highlight the artistic contributions of black gay men to the broader LGBT community.
Liquid Fire Productions - $5,000
General support for liquidFire Productions, which empowers lesbians of color to create, develop, and stage original multidisciplinary performances that authentically express the individual's experience and promotes social change.
Oakland East Bay Gay Men's Chorus - $5,000
General support to develop a racially, ethnically, socio-economically, and gender diverse choral group; present regular musical performances; promote tolerance of diversity; and oppose discrimination by maintaining a visible presence.
Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project - $5,000
General support for programs that promote the creation and exhibition of films/videos that reflect the experiences, stories, and lives of queer women of color, and address social and political issues pertinent to their community.
Quelaco - $5,000
General support for QueLACo to promote the development, production, and presentation of multidisciplinary arts by and for queer Latinos in the San Francisco Bay Area, fostering discussions on social justice, art, and culture.
Youth GLAM Show Choir - $7,550
General support for the GLAM "Show Choir" featuring singers, instrumentalists, and dancers. GLAM will provide a space for LGBTQ and allied musicians, ages 12-22, to make music and express themselves in a safe and supportive environment.

Children, Youth, and Families

Ark of Refuge - $5,000
General support for Ark to identify, challenge, and overcome the individual, social, cultural, and institutional barriers that discourage or prevent underserved populations from accessing vital services and educational opportunities that promote and enhance well-being.
Center for Human Development - $5,000
Project support for the Empowerment Program, a support, advocacy, and community-level HIV prevention program for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth and young adults living in Contra Costa County.
Family Builders by Adoption - $3,000
Project support for the Forever Family Project, which supports LGBT individuals and couples who have adopted children with special needs through Family Builders By Adoption.
Larkin Street Youth Services - $4,000
Project support for programs that create a continuum of services that inspire youth to move beyond the street by nurturing potential, promoting dignity, and supporting bold steps by all.
Lighthouse Community Center - $5,000
General support for LCC, which provides a safe and substance-free meeting space for social, informational, and community awareness programs serving the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) community of all ages and their friends in southern Alameda County.
The Outlet Program - $5,000
General support for programs that empower lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer ,and questioning (LGBTQQ) youth ages 13-18 living on the Mid-Peninsula.
Positive Images - $3,000
General support for Positive Images' volunteer-run support program for LGBTQ youth in Sonoma County.

Elders

Lavender Seniors of the East Bay - $5,000
General support for programs that improve the quality of life for older (age 55 and older) lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender residents of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties through outreach, advocacy, and education.
Purple Moon Dance Project - $5,000
General support for Purple Moon to address the visibility of lesbians and women of color. Its mission is to develop a greater appreciation of cultural diversity, especially for lesbians and women of color, and to effect social change, peace, and healing in our society through the medium of dance.

Health and Human Services

AGUILAS - $5,000
General support for developing programs that promote health, well-being, and community-building and that foster positive self-identities, healthy relationships, and leadership skills in a supportive, culturally sensitive environment for gay/bisexual Latinos.
AIDS Project East Bay - $5,000
General support for programs that serve all the residents of Alameda County, but primarily serve gay and bisexual men of color and transgender individuals who fall below the poverty line and are diagnosed with multiple conditions (such as HIV, hepatitis C, substance use, and mental health issues).
Immune Enhancement Project - $5,000
Project support for programs for low- and no-income people with chronic conditions (such as HIV, hepatitis, and cancer), primarily from the LGBT community.
Lesbian Health Research Center UCSF - $5,000
General support for "Estimating the Lesbian Population in San Francisco: A Capture-Recapture Approach Program."
San Francisco Gay Men's Community Initiative - $5,000
General support for programs that facilitate the mobilization of gay men around a range of grassroots community-building and health-promoting activities that endeavor to educate, support, and motivate.
Tenderloin AIDS Resource Center - $5,000
Project support for the transgender program at TARC, a nonprofit social service and referral agency organized to meet the needs of the diverse and often ignored residents of the Tenderloin neighborhood.
Vital Life Services - $5,000
General support for programs to prevent the spread of HIV disease and to enhance the quality of life for those infected with the disease.
