Building Community Through Queer Sports – From the Bay to the Gay Games
Thursday, August 20, 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. PT | Free Virtual Forum
From neighborhood recreation leagues to international competitive arenas, Bay Area queer athletes and sports organizations have proven that sports are a powerful force for excellence, representation, leadership, and—especially today—resistance. Join us online for a conversation and brief Q&A with athletes from SF Bay Area LGBTQ sports organizations fresh off the courts, tracks, and fields of the 2026 Gay Games in Valencia, Spain. This edition of Horizons Forum will explore how these experiences deepen our sense of queer community and the vital importance of the local queer sports organizations that make these journeys—and the lifelong connections they inspire—possible.
More than four decades ago, Horizons Foundation helped make history by providing funding for the inaugural 1982 Gay Games in San Francisco. Since then, the Bay Area has remained a global leader in LGBTQ sports, with dozens of local queer leagues and recreation organizations creating welcoming spaces where people can compete, build community, find mentorship, and experience belonging.
This interactive forum brings that legacy full circle. The panel of local athletes will discuss how their leagues have shaped their lives far beyond the playing field and share what it meant to represent the Bay Area at the Gay Games, competing alongside thousands of LGBTQ athletes and artists from around the world in a celebration of inclusion, visibility, and human connection.
Join us online Thursday, August 20 from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. PT. Registration is free.
