This August, Secure Our Community’s Future

This August, we're honoring National Make-A-Will Month — a crucial time for the LGBTQ community to reflect on securing a collective future. Why does Make-A-Will Month matter? For LGBTQ individuals and couples, estate planning can be especially critical.
Protect Yourself and Your Chosen Family
State law often doesn't recognize non-married partners, close friends, or non-traditional family structures without the proper legal documents in place. This affects not only how your estate is distributed after your death, but also who has the legal right to care for you and manage your finances if you become incapacitated. Creating your estate plan means the trusted individuals YOU choose will have the authority to act when it matters most.
But creating an estate plan is also an act of love — it allows you to care for those who matter most to you, long after you're gone. Whether that's a long-term partner, dear friend, or a beloved furry companion, putting the right documents in place brings real peace of mind.
Create Your Legacy and Support the Community
Today, our LGBTQ community is under sustained and alarming attack. As we see time and time again, the threats to our community mean that the fight for democracy and LGBTQ justice, freedom, and equality is not won in a single year or through a single campaign — it takes generations. As these challenges grow, planned gifts matter now more than ever.
Since 1980, Horizons has invested tens of millions in LGBTQ organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area, across the country, and internationally. By including Horizons in your estate plans, you ensure that our community remains resilient, responsive, and ready for whatever the future holds. Big or small, your legacy gifts form a powerful, enduring resource dedicated to supporting future LGBTQ generations to have the resources they'll need to safeguard our rights and meet our community's evolving needs.
How to Start
Horizons is offering a straightforward, cost-free way to help you create your documents. Through our partner, FreeWill, the estate planning process is faster and easier than ever, and you can designate any charitable institution — including Horizons — as a beneficiary.
FreeWill also offers a beneficiary planning tool, which provides assistance with naming beneficiaries for additional assets, such as retirement accounts and life insurance policies.
