OVERVIEW
Since our founding in 1985, the GLBT Historical Society has become an internationally recognized leader in LGBTQ+ public history. Today, our archives hold more than 1,000 individual collections documenting more than a century of LGBTQ+ life and culture. Over 12 years ago, we established and currently operate the first LGBTQ+ museum in the nation, located in the Castro neighborhood, that reaches an average of 20,000 individuals in a typical year and serves as a major tourist destination, attracting visitors from every corner of the globe. Our archives engage over 400 students, educators, researchers, and artists annually. Free community access to our archives helps individuals and groups create thousands of knowledge-producing articles, books, podcasts, artistic projects, films, television series, and more, increasing understanding and appreciation of LGBTQ people and our history. Please visit our museum on 18th Street and archives in mid-market or via our website to learn more!
