San Francisco Earthquakes LGBTQ Plus Ice Hockey Club

OVERVIEW

The San Francisco Earthquakes LGBTQ+ Ice Hockey Club began in 1998, the brainchild of lesbian and gay recreational sports enthusiasts seeking to play hockey at the 1998 Gay Games in Amsterdam. These pioneers wanted to “break the ice” and ensure that all could enjoy the inspiration, recreation, community, and fun that hockey offers. Today, the Earthquakes advance the elimination of discrimination toward LGBTQ+ individuals, their supporters, and causes by providing a safe, healthy, non-discriminatory forum for public-facing, community-based ice hockey. We are a Bay Area gateway for LGBTQ+ players and fans, especially young adults and those from underrepresented communities. The Earthquakes are comprised of individuals who identify as transgender, straight, bisexual, lesbian and gay; range in age from 23 to 63; originate from across North America and Europe; include members of the African American/Black, API, and Latino communities; and reflect a wide breadth of professions and interests.
