From the Board and President
When we wrote this same letter last year, dark clouds were just beginning to gather around us. We knew things were going to get bad. Today, a storm rages—even harder than we expected. The stark political and cultural realities facing LGBTQ people weigh heavily on us. But you know as well as we do that our community has survived terrible storms before. They made us stronger. As we reflect on the lessons of the past—especially as we celebrated our 45th anniversary this past year—we find the strength to weather today’s challenges: through pride and resistance.
During this challenging fiscal year (2024 – 2025), Horizons showed pride and resistance like never before. As our community faced unprecedented funding instability and political attacks, we responded with focus and resolve. We awarded more than $8 million in total grants, which included $2.5 million to more than 60 local LGBTQ organizations, maintaining our position as one of the nation's leading funders of LGBTQ communities.
We also marked the launch of several innovative initiatives that speak directly to the urgent needs of our time. As local, state, and federal grants dwindled, we stepped up to award $1 million in new funding to four Bay Area Trans POC organizations in a first-of-its-kind program that Horizons created to fuel the leadership, resilience, and long-term infrastructure of trans communities of color—communities too often targeted, underfunded, and overlooked. Our new Safety and Security funding initiative awarded rapid-response funding to help LGBTQ organizations implement innovative solutions aimed at creating safer environments for LGBTQ people. And in partnership with six grantee organizations and the California Department of Public Health, we delivered nearly $2 million to expand healthcare access for women and trans people—a collaboration that demonstrated what shared vision can achieve.
Through it all, Horizons’ critical partners—you, our generous donors, and our grantee partners—have been right there with us showing pride and resistance in support of our beloved community. We share our most heartfelt thanks with you all, especially during these stormy times. We know you’ll stand proudly with us, and for our community, through all that is to come.

Financials
Horizons’ July 2024 – June 2025 fiscal year audited financial statements show continued financial growth at Horizons, ending the year with more than $68 million in total net assets. This 7% increase resulted from generous bequests, significant contributions to donor-advised funds, and investment performance. Horizons continued to operate efficiently, with 90% of expenses devoted to grants and programs. Combined with a record year of grantmaking and impact, the financials indicate 2025 was a strong year for the foundation.

Our Recent Impact
Since 1980, Horizons has awarded grants across broad funding areas and through multiple funding initiatives. Community Issues and Donor Engagement grantmaking programs award vital funding to LGBTQ nonprofits and programs throughout the nine counties of the San Francisco Bay Area.
