My family had what I always thought to be a simple but beautiful Thanksgiving tradition. An unlit candle would be on the table in front of each of us. We would go around the room, each of us sharing something for which we were especially grateful. And then we’d light our candle.

Were I to light such a candle now, I would say that I’m deeply grateful to be gay. There’re a hundred reasons for that. There’s one of those, however, that’s on my mind right now, at this moment.

I’m thankful to be gay.

Because that means being part of the historic and extraordinary LGBTQ community. It means being part of a movement, something so much bigger than me or anyone else. It means being part of a movement that has truly changed the Bay Area, the nation, and the world – and continues to do so.

I’m grateful to be a small part of a movement that knows how to fight for our rights, how to protect one another, that at times of crisis pulls together. As a gay person, I’m a member of what, at its best, is a gloriously diverse and brilliant community. What’s more, we’re a community that knows how to celebrate, to throw a party or a parade second to none.

Not least, being gay has led me to this work at Horizons, which has allowed me to meet hundreds – thousands – of people. Queer, trans, lesbian, bi, gay, and more —all dedicated to the same vision: that every LGBTQ person lives freely and fully. That includes every donor to Horizons, every grantee partner, every volunteer, every staff member, and every board member.

This year, I light my candle for you. I’m grateful for you and to you on this Thanksgiving. Thank you for everything you have done – and do – to make our movement – and Horizons Foundation itself – strong. May you enjoy healthy, warm, and happy holidays.
