From the Board Co-Chairs and President
Much has changed since the earliest days of the COVID pandemic. In-person events, including Horizons’ own, are finally back.
Lockdowns are no longer the norm. Though tens of thousands of cases are still reported each day, we have adapted to a new normal. In short, we’ve moved forward, the theme of this year’s annual report, which covers the period from July 2021 to June 2022 – a time which arguably saw both the pandemic’s peak and significant recovery from it.
At Horizons, we started this report period as COVID cases surged, and we continued our pandemic response with a round of grantmaking hyper-focused on COVID-related direct services. But we followed these grants with a return to our flagship funding program, Community Issues, which looked beyond COVID to support community initiatives striving to address entrenched injustices and meet our community’s ongoing needs, especially those of the most underserved segments of the LGBTQ community.
In other words, we aimed to support initiatives moving our community forward. For instance, our latest grantee partners included organizations supporting transgender men of color as they obtain gender-affirming surgery; providing programs for isolated LGBTQ seniors; developing Spanish-language theatre rooted in the queer experience; empowering LGBTQ youth of color with leadership development opportunities – and dozens more. We are especially proud that these were the first grants under our updated grantmaking strategy, which explicitly names transgender people, LGBTQ people of color, bisexuals, LGBTQ youth, LGBTQ elders, and LGBTQ refugees and asylees as priority populations.

Secure our community's future
As always, however, Horizons’ perspective is not only on the present – we must look to the future. During this report period, we renewed our focus on legacy giving and building a permanent source of support for the LGBTQ community. We launched a multifaceted campaign, Pride Forever, focused on raising awareness of the transformative potential of gifts through wills and trusts. Through this campaign, we rolled out a partnership with FreeWill, a tool which democratizes legacy giving, enabling LGBTQ people to protect not only our loved ones, but also the community at large.
To move forward requires each and every one of us – our exceptional grantee partners, generous donors, and institutional partners alike. As much as this report is about sharing our progress, it is also about recognizing you – the people who make up Horizons’ incredible community, the people who move us forward.

Our Recent Impact
After Aaron, a trans-masculine individual, began his medical transition in 2013, he recognized his privilege to have access to affordable and quality transitional surgeries. He vowed to give other trans individuals the same chance.
The archive’s work ensures that the history of marginalized transgender folks is now accessible and safely preserved for future generations
A.B.O. Comix, a recipient of a recent Community Issues grant from Horizons Foundation, is a collective of creatives and activists who work to amplify the voices of LGBTQ prisoners through art, keep them connected to the outside community, and help them fight towards liberation.
Horizons Foundation’s grantee partner OLAS, which means “wave” in Spanish and stands for LGBT Organization for Support and Solidarity, works with LGBTQ Latin- American immigrants, especially asylum seekers, in order to foster self-acceptance, emotional wellbeing, and community support.

Through a legacy gift,
it can last forever.
Horizons launched a public education campaign focused on legacy giving, or making gifts through wills and trusts. As part of the campaign, Horizons hosted a virtual information session, Pride Forever: An Introduction to Legacy Giving for the LGBTQ Community. At the session, attendees learned more about the transformative potential of these gifts for the LGBTQ community, heard the stories of legacy donors, and explored options for getting started with estate planning.

Horizons ended its year with a $3.8 million positive change in net assets, notwithstanding the broad stock market declines of 2022. Our donors continue to invest in Horizons, and their gifts increase the foundation’s impact each year. The LGBTQ Community Endowment Fund – dedicated to the long-term strength of the LGBTQ community – stood at $16.8 million, an increase of 65% in the past five years. Of our operating expenses, 92% went towards grants and programs, while 8% went towards supporting expenses.
