Bay Area LGBTQ Community Foundation, at 40th Anniversary Virtual Gala, Celebrates Nearly $1 Million in COVID-19 Grantmaking, Over $50 Million in 40-Year History

Star-studded Virtual Gala Raises Over $390,000 for Critical Community Work

September 14, 2020, San Francisco – Horizons Foundation, at its 40th Anniversary Virtual Gala on Saturday, September 12, announced that it has awarded over $940,000 in COVID-19 emergency grants to 71 Bay Area LGBTQ nonprofits, and over $50 million in worldwide grantmaking since 1980. These new grantmaking totals include a recent third round of COVID-19 emergency grants totalling $272,736 to 36 organizations; view the full list of Horizons’ COVID-19 grantee partners and this video about Horizons’ overall COVID-19 response.

“Horizons marked our 40th Anniversary in the most meaningful way possible: by supporting our community, as we have since the beginning,” said Roger Doughty, Horizons’ President. “Our incredible community has truly shown up — in this moment of multiple, profound crises, but also this moment of celebration for the world’s first LGBTQ community foundation.”

Horizons’ 40th Anniversary Virtual Gala, which raised over $390,000 for Horizons’ work, featured remarks from artists, writers, and performers Todrick Hall, Bowen Yang, Sandra Bernhard, Marga Gomez, Jewelle Gomez, and Donna Sachet; community activists Miss Major Griffin-Gracy and Kris Perry and Sandy Stier; San Francisco Mayor London N. Breed and former state senator Mark Leno; and nonprofit leaders Imani Rupert-Gordon of National Center for Lesbian Rights, Kris Hayashi and Cecilia Chung of Transgender Law Center, and Brett Andrews of PRC.
