Over our 35 year history, Horizons Foundation has built a strong financial base to serve the LGBT community. We firmly believe in financial transparency with our supporters and the community. Here are some snapshots of key aspects of Horizons’ financial record and links to important financial materials. Assets Under Management

Assets under management matter for a foundation, because it is ultimately from those assets that grants can be made to support the community. Horizons’ assets include the LGBT Community Endowment Fund, our 90-plus donor-advised funds, and various other assets. Over time, Horizons’ assets have grown to more than $20 million and we’ve registered significant growth in recent years.

Grantmaking: Supporting the Community

Our purpose in increasing assets is to fund programs and grants to nonprofits that advocate for and serve LGBT people. The exact amount of grantmaking by Horizons Foundation in any given year varies because grant funds are both generated by and granted out through multiple vehicles. Over the past five years, the foundation’s total grantmaking has been in the range of $1.5 million to just under $2 million each year. As the LGBT Community Endowment Fund and other assets continue to grow, our level of grantmaking will increase proportionately.

Horizons carefully stewards our resources and works to maximize the amount that directly supports the LGBT community, while still investing sufficiently in the foundation to ensure our continued strength and future growth. As the graph indicates, in 2013, Horizons devoted 81% of its expenditures to grantmaking and other programs, and 19% to fundraising, management, and general operating expenses. Comparable charts for previous years’ expenditures can be found in our annual reports.
