Date: November 24, 2003
For Immediate Release

Horizons Foundation has announced the awarding of 42 grants to organizations and projects serving the LGBT community in the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area. "We are honored to support the incredible service and advocacy represented by the 2003 Community Issues Grants grant recipients," said Roger Doughty, Horizons' Executive Director.

Horizons' Community Issues grants are made based on recommendations from panels of diverse community members, who evaluate proposals in the areas of arts and culture; advocacy, awareness, and civil rights; health and human services; elders; and children, youth, and families. Danny Kirchoff, Horizons' Program Coordinator, notes "The community panel members weigh a huge variety of factors in evaluating each proposal. It's their insight and experience that ensure the grants reflect community needs."

Grant recipients are based in San Francisco, Alameda, Marin, and Sonoma counties and serve a wide range of communities and focus on issues ranging from arts festivals to mental health to HIV/AIDS services to youth advocacy. The full list of awardees can be found at horizonsfoundation.org/grants/grantees/2003/communityissues. Horizons' grants in the health area are supported by a grant from The California Endowment.

"We are especially pleased to have been able to increase our Community Issues grants modestly in this tough economic year," said Doughty. "Our only regret," he added, "is that we could not fund more of the excellent proposals that we received."
